Window Safety

Did you know that windows are one of the top five hazards in the home?

In the US, approximately 4,000 children under the age of 10 are treated in the ER for window fall injuries. Navy Region Northwest wants to help keep all children safe in the home, which is why our Housing Service Centers offer free window safety devices – upon request – to families living in privatized housing.

Children are naturally curious and love exploring their surroundings. But there are steps we can all take to help keep them safe from window-related accidents. Being mindful of these safety measures can help in the home itself as well as the environments where our kids play. We want you and your family to feel secure no matter where you live. The most effective protection is ongoing parental supervision.

Windows Are Not Playgrounds

  • Treat windows like roads – interesting to look at, but never safe to play by or nearby
  • Keep furniture, like beds, cribs, and changing tables, and anything else children can climb on, away from windows
  • Supervise children when they are in rooms with open windows
  • Window screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep children in. They are not strong enough to prevent a fall

Check Twice, Watch Always

  • Build habits around checking window surroundings during routine activities
  • Make checking window locks and the placement of furniture a regular part of your cleaning routine
  • When you open a window for ventilation, open windows that are out of a child's reach, such as the top sash of a double-hung window

Protect What Matters

  • Window safety devices are installed to protect children from falls. If they are missing or broken, report it immediately
  • Do not bypass or disable window safety locks. They are there for a reason
  • If you have issues with your window locks or have questions about how they work, contact your housing office immediately for assistance

Make Your Home Ready and Safe

  • Learn how to use window safety devices in under a minute. They only work when they are properly engaged
  • Familiarize yourself with the window safety features in your home. If you’re unsure how they work, ask for a demonstration from your housing office
  • Test your window locks and guards monthly to ensure they are in good working order

Safety Starts at Home

  • Accidental window falls happen in the blink of an eye. Don’t let it happen to your child
  • Talk to your children about window safety in an age-appropriate way
  • Share window safety tips with babysitters, grandparents, and anyone else who may care for your children
